YOUR PERSONAL EVACUATION PLAN
Per the Calgary Fire Department, it is not a requirement of a condo building this size to conduct regular fire drills.
It is the sole responsibility of all Gates 2 Residents to establish their own personalized fire evacuation plan ahead of time.
It is important to plan two different escape routes. For example, you may not be able to exit your designated emergency exits; therefore, you may need to plan to escape through a window or go out onto your balcony or patio.
Always ensure your Unit door is closed behind you (but do not lock it).
All Residents should know where the fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and exit doors are located.
Remember, by accepting responsibility to keep your Unit fire safe and have an evacuation plan, you are not only protecting yourself but your neighbours as well. A little bit of planning and awareness can make the difference between safety and disaster for everyone!
FIRE ALARM AND EVACUATION GUIDELINES
Floor plans and evacuation exits are clearly marked and posted beside the elevator on all floors.
A fire alarm pull station and fire extinguisher are located on each floor at both stairwell exits. Additionally, fire extinguishers can be found throughout the parkade and in the hallway just outside the waste and recycling room. Another pull station is located right beside the Canada Post parcel storage lockers. All Residents should know where the fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and exit doors are located. Be sure to familiarize yourself with their locations.
If a fire and subsequent building evacuation is necessary due to a fire in YOUR Unit, be sure to activate the building fire alarm by pulling down on the fire alarm pull station handle on your way out. This will trigger a building-wide alarm and will alert all Residents to evacuate. Gates 2 is a wood-framed building and is therefore considered highly combustible. In the event of a fire, evacuation is imperative!
When the fire alarm sounds, all Residents need to take the following actions:
TURN OFF stove/oven, toaster, BBQ, and any other similar appliances that pose fire risk.
CLOSE ALL WINDOWS.
TAKE PET(s) – all must be on leash or restrained.
CLOSE DOOR TO YOUR UNIT (note: during an emergency evacuation, the fire department recommends that you leave your door unlocked for access by fire fighters should it be needed).
LEAVE THE BUILDING BY THE NEAREST EXIT (DO NOT USE ELEVATORS).
CALL OUT to neighbours that evacuation is in process.
DO NOT ENTER PARKADE (leave car where it is).
GO DIRECTLY TO THE DESIGNATED MUSTER POINT which is at the park found at the west end of Quarry Gate along Quarry Way.
Once you have left the building:
Stay well away from the building at the designated Muster Point, or move to a designated alternate area if so advised.
Leave room for emergency vehicles to access the building.
Stay at the Muster Point for headcount and await further instructions from the fire department.
If you have a mobility problem and cannot evacuate:
You should stay in your Unit.
Call 911.
Give your name, address and Unit #.
