CALL 911 As a general rule: get out of the building; on your way out activate the red alarm pull station; then call the fire department from our designated Muster Point (see below). When you call, be ready to provide your location and any other information about the fire.
WHAT TO DO IF A FIRE STRIKES
If your planned escape route becomes smoky, get down on your hands and knees and crawl. Smoke rises, so the cleanest air is near the floor.
Follow the Gates 2 Evacuation protocols. Go directly to the designated Muster Point which is at the park at the west end of Quarry Gate along Quarry Way. Once evacuated, never go back into your Unit. If you think someone is trapped inside, notify the fire department. Wait for further direction from the fire department.
If you can't escape your Unit, stuff wet towels, sheets, or clothes around the door and vents to keep out smoke. Additionally, use duct tape (or similar) to tape and seal the perimeter of the door to prevent smoke from penetrating your Unit. Seal the vents, air ducts, and other areas where smoke is entering the Unit in the same manner.
Call 911 and tell them where you are in the building. If no smoke is coming into the room you are in, open a window slightly. Stay low and wave a bright cloth, towel, or sheet out the window to signal your location.
If you have a mobility problem and cannot evacuate:
You should stay in your Unit
Call 911
Give your name, address and Unit #
Let them know that there is a fire and that you are unable to evacuate due to your disability.
Remember, by accepting responsibility to keep your Unit fire safe, you are not only protecting yourself but your neighbours as well. A little bit of planning and awareness can make the difference between safety and disaster for everyone!
An annual in-suite inspection of the fire alarm system will be scheduled by the Condominium Manager, and notice will be given to enter all Units prior.
